Architecture as a Service

Most organisations do not need another architecture document. They need an architecture capability: the standing ability to make coherent technology decisions, week after week, as the estate and the business move. Architecture as a Service is our answer – a team of Meganoesis architecture specialists, engaged as a service rather than a project, who create, develop, mature, or transform your enterprise architecture, and who measure the progress rather than assert it.

Why “as a service”

The traditional routes to architecture capability both have well-known defects. Hiring builds slowly, competes in a scarce market for people whose calibre you can only verify after the fact, and concentrates risk in a small number of individuals. The project route – a consultancy arrives, produces a target state, and departs – reliably yields the artefact and rarely the capability; the document ages from the day the authors leave.

Architecture as a Service is the third route. You engage a standing, blended team of Meganoesis veterans with an explicit dual mandate: do the architecture work your estate needs now, and build the client-side capability that progressively needs us less. The service flexes with demand, carries no key-person risk, and is measured against a maturity baseline agreed at the start – so both parties can see, on evidence, whether the architecture function is actually improving.

What the service comprises

Five modes, one standing team.

01

Create

For organisations without a meaningful architecture function: we establish one – operating model, decision rights, principles, tooling, and the first cycle of real decisions taken through it. A function is created by exercising it, not by documenting it, so we start with your live decisions from week one.

02

Develop and mature

For functions that exist but underperform: we take a working role inside the function, raise the standard of its outputs decision by decision, and coach your architects against real work rather than training material. Maturity is advanced deliberately, dimension by dimension, against the scored baseline described below.

03

Transform

For architecture functions that the business has stopped listening to: we re-found the function on the decision-centred model – anchored to the consequential choices on the organisation's calendar, publishing positioned judgements rather than compliance gates, and accountable for the decisions it changes. This is the deepest intervention, and we are candid at the outset about what it requires of the client's leadership as well as of us.

04

Assess and score

Every AaaS engagement opens with an architecture assessment: the estate's coherence, the function's effectiveness, and the gap between the documentation and the deployed truth. The assessment produces a maturity score across defined dimensions – strategy alignment, decision effectiveness, data and information discipline, technical standards adherence, and estate coherence – with the evidence for each score stated, and the scoring method disclosed so your own teams can repeat it. The score is not a beauty contest; it is the baseline against which the service is judged. We re-score at agreed intervals, and we publish the movement to you, in both directions.

05

Modernise

Where the assessment finds an estate or an architecture practice built for a previous decade, we run modernisation as part of the service: rationalising the portfolio, retiring ornamental artefacts, refreshing standards for the current platform reality – cloud posture, integration fabric, data foundations, and AI readiness – and re-pointing the function at the decisions that now matter.

How the service runs

A named lead. A flexing team.

A named Meganoesis lead architect owns the engagement throughout. The team behind them flexes by discipline and demand – enterprise, solution, data, technical, and systems specialists drawn in as the work requires – at a cadence agreed quarterly and adjustable without ceremony. You receive the working outputs continuously, a maturity re-score at agreed intervals, and a standing view of what we did, what we found, and what we recommend next.

Two commitments distinguish the service, and we invite you to hold us to both. First, capability transfer is contractual, not rhetorical: the service is explicitly designed to make your own function stronger, and the maturity score measures your capability, not our activity. Second, the exit is designed at the entrance: an AaaS engagement that never ends is an AaaS engagement that has failed its own definition, and we say so in the agreement.

The failure this prevents

Two failures, in fact. The architecture function that produces artefacts nobody uses and influences no decision of consequence – capability theatre, funded indefinitely. And its common successor: the consultancy dependency that replaces the function instead of building it, invoicing in perpetuity for judgement the client was promised they would eventually own. Architecture as a Service is constructed, structurally and contractually, against both.
